The project begins with Lex entering a remote Yi village in the mountains of Yunnan, where she volunteered as a teacher. After living with the Yi people for several days, Lex abandoned her initial intent of being a high-minded educator and bearer of an "advanced" civilization, realizing she was the one who truly needed to be "educated." Lex discovered that Yi culture is more healing, joyful, and free than the urban civilization she came from. As a so-called representative of a "superior" culture, Lex was both challenged and transformed by the Yi way of life, learning that no civilization is inherently superior or inferior, and that the interaction between civilizations is a reciprocal process. In its first phase, the project allows the audience to appreciate the beauty and charm of the Yi people through an album and an art collection. In the second phase, it provides an immersive experience of Yi music and dance, enabling the audience to truly engage with their culture. The aim of this project is to encourage viewers to reshape their understanding of minority cultures, reconsider the equality of civilizations, and reflect on the reciprocal exchange between them. It seeks to explore the diverse relationships and potential for integration between minority and majority civilizations.
· Art Collection Portfolio & Album
· Music Installation
To showcase the potential for the intertwining of different civilizations with the Yi culture from deep within the mountain, the second phase of this project has designed a cross-cultural and multilingual musical score based on the Yi people’s dance videos and music. The aim is to invite audiences from various cultural backgrounds to engage with Yi culture. Eight musical scores will be displayed in a circular arrangement, reflecting the formation of the Yi’s traditional dance. As viewers read through the scores in sequence, they will experience a sense of participation in the Yi people’s traditional dance, Da Tiao.
