December 12th, 2023 · Video Installation Art · I Am a Palm Tree
In this project, Lex crafts 20 designs inspired by the iconic Los Angeles palm trees, weaving them into a video and selecting five for silkscreen printing onto express boxes. Like the palm tree, Lex is an outsider rooted in this land, navigating the delicate balance of cultural assimilation and self-discovery. The culture of Los Angeles arrives like 'delivery packages,' shaping Lex in subtle yet profound ways, each one a gift to carry into the unfolding future. The project expresses how, over the past three years, Lex has developed her interest in diverse cultures.
April 20th, 2024 · T-Shirts & Tapestry & Website · Luv Ur Neighbors
In this project, Lex’s artistic journey explores themes of unity, connection, and love, reflecting the human experience of community and belonging. As a newcomer three years ago, Lex found a sense of home in the New Life Church, where a collective commitment to care and nurture revealed that home is built through relationships. This experience of interdependence—people serving and supporting one another—profoundly shapes Lex's work, including a non-commercial series of clothing, tapestry, and website designs for Stussy, embodying the ethos of connection and compassion.
2023-2024 · Calender & Passport & Stamp & Flag & Archive Center · Nandan Island
This project unfolds in two phases: The first, in 2023, captures my efforts to protect the "chaotic," "backward," and "disordered" Nandan community within a modern city center. The second, in 2024, reflects on the loss and commemoration of Nandan's disappearance upon my return.
September 3rd, 2024 · Promotion Poster · Security Codex · Security Scenario Simulation
The project examines how subcultures shape and challenge mainstream culture, especially within power-driven security systems. It explores how individuals with strong cultural identities shift from passive recipients to active influencers of their own narratives. By analyzing the interplay between culture and security, the project reveals how subcultures enrich and redefine collective views on security, land, and authority.
October 21th, 2024 · Almbum & Art Book & Sheet Music Installation · A Solitary Cloud And Solid Trees
The project begins with Lex entering a remote Yi village in Yunnan, where she volunteers as a teacher. Living with the Yi people, Lex soon realized that she was the one who needed to be "educated," letting go of the notion of bringing an "advanced" civilization. She found the Yi culture to be more healing, joyful, and free than her own urban environment, challenging her views on cultural superiority. In its first phase, the project highlights the beauty of Yi culture through an album and art collection. The second phase offers an immersive experience of Yi music and dance. The project aims to reshape viewers' understanding of minority cultures, explore the equality of civilizations, and reflect on the reciprocal exchange between them.
